How many bundles of shingles a simple gable roof takes, by building size and pitch. The numbers come from the roofing calculator: (width + 2 overhangs) × (length + 2 overhangs) × the slope factor for the pitch gives the roof area; divide by 100 for squares, add 10% waste, then 3 bundles per square, rounded up.
Building size is wall to wall: width across the ridge × length along it, with a 12" overhang at the eaves and the gable ends. The steeper the pitch, the more roof the same footprint has: at 12/12 it is 41% more than flat.

Rounding and how to use the chart
Example: a 24 × 40 ft house at 6/12 with 12" overhangs is 26 × 42 = 1,092 square feet of plan, × 1.118 = 1,221 square feet of roof, or 12.21 squares; with 10% waste 13.43 squares, × 3 = 40.3, so 41 bundles. Bundles are rounded up, squares shown to one decimal.
Hip roofs, valleys and dormers waste more (about 15% and up), and some heavy shingles come 4 or 5 bundles per square, so check the wrapper. Starter strip, ridge cap, underlayment and drip edge are extra. For other sizes, overhangs or waste, use the roofing calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How many bundles of shingles for a 24x40 roof?
41 bundles at 6/12 pitch with 12" overhangs and 10% waste, which is 13.4 squares. At 4/12 it is 38 bundles and at 8/12, 44.
How many squares is a 30x40 house roof?
16.5 squares at 6/12 with 12" overhangs and 10% waste, or 50 bundles. At 4/12 it is 15.6 squares and at 8/12, 17.8.
How many bundles of shingles for a two-car garage?
A 24 × 24 ft garage with a 6/12 roof, 12" overhangs and 10% waste takes 25 bundles (8.3 squares); at 4/12, 24 bundles. A smaller 20 × 20 garage takes 18 at 6/12.
